Primavera in Puglia, Spring in the Salento; April, May and early June are perfect months for a holiday in the historic heel of Italy. Spring comes early in southern Italy. By the start of April the weather is warm in the daytime, wild flowers are covering the ground in the olive groves, and the superb sandy beaches are deserted.
Our house, Casa Lorenzo is in the historic centre of Nardò. Close to the beautiful beaches of the Ionian coast and less than half an hour from Lecce, fashionable Nardò is the place to be seen in the Summer. But before the heat and the crowds of August, it is a lively and interesting town. We love the festivals, such as the Festival of San Giuseppe in March, Nardò is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy Italian culture, climate and cuisine.
Piazza Salandra, just around the corner from Casa Lorenzo, is the centre of life in Nardò. With a lively passeggiata, the restaurants and bars serve great local food, and are open all year round. BBCTV’s Hairy Bikers recently featured the local food, “cucina povera”, filming from our local restaurant Trattoria Antica Salandra, just of the Piazza. The historic but hip Caffe Parisi is a great place to have aperitivi and watch the world go by.
What’s the weather like in Spring in the Salento?
According to the weather underground website , last April over half of the days were over 20C, and in May the average daytime temperature was 25C.
What to do in Spring in the Salento?
As well as going to the beach, in Spring the weather is cool enough to do some hiking. The Porto Selavaggio nature park, less than 10km from Nardò, is a great place for walks and a picnic.
But if the weather is not so good, the beautiful, baroque city of Lecce is less than half an hour away, by car. Along with its stunning architecture, it has sophisticated shopping and restaurants, and museums and art galleries.
